OFITECO responsible for updating the A‑12 highway project in Burgos

Portada » OFITECO responsible for updating the A‑12 highway project in Burgos

OFITECO is updating the Construction Project for the A‑12 Highway, the Camino de Santiago route, in the section between Villamayor del Río and Villafranca Montes de Oca. The initiative, promoted by the Directorate‑General for Highways adapts the previously approved project to new technical, regulatory, and environmental requirements, ensuring the infrastructure meets current traffic demands and future mobility needs. The project forms part of Spain’s national strategy to modernise key corridors in the province of Burgos.

Updated Alignment and Renewed Technical Criteria

Reviewing the alignment is one of the central components of the work. OFITECO is updating geometric parameters — including radii, gradients, clothoids, and cross‑sections — to comply with Standard 3.1‑IC, with the aim of improving safety, driving comfort, and geometric continuity. The planned structures are also being reviewed to ensure compliance with the Structural Code and Eurocodes, analysing typologies, foundation conditions, and durability.

Strengthening Key Studies

OFITECO is carrying out a comprehensive update of the geotechnical studies through new field campaigns — including boreholes, test pits, and laboratory testing — to obtain a more accurate characterisation of the materials and define appropriate slopes, embankments, and cuttings. Longitudinal and transverse drainage is also being reviewed in accordance with Standard 5.2‑IC, ensuring proper runoff management and improved hydraulic performance of existing or planned structures.

Commitment to Safety and Sustainability

The updated project incorporates a revised Risk Study aligned with the latest procedures of the Directorate‑General for Highways, assessing potential impacts related to traffic, geotechnical conditions, utilities, and environmental factors. It also integrates advanced road‑safety measures and includes actions to strengthen climate resilience, ecological connectivity, and compliance with the valid Environmental Impact Statement. Sustainability criteria such as material optimisation, emissions reduction, and protection of the Camino de Santiago environment are also included.

Technical Expertise Supporting a Strategic Infrastructure

With this project, OFITECO reaffirms its expertise in the design, supervision, and updating of major road infrastructures. Its technical knowledge and ability to integrate regulatory and sustainability criteria enable the company to offer robust solutions for a highway that is essential to connectivity in Burgos and mobility along the Camino de Santiago. This work represents a significant step forward in improving the safety, efficiency, and functionality of the section.
