The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has provisionally approved the technical document and the environmental impact assessment for the AP-4 widening project between Dos Hermanas and Las Cabezas de San Juan, in the province of Seville. The project is being drafted by OFITECO, as part of a joint venture, within an initiative that will adapt the road to new traffic needs.
This initiative aims to increase the motorway’s capacity and improve traffic flow, road safety and service levels. To this end, the construction of a third lane in each direction is planned along a 34.4-kilometre stretch between the AP-4 connection with the A-4 in Dos Hermanas and the area around the Las Cabezas de San Juan interchange.
Additionally, the project includes the refurbishment of the Las Cabezas de San Juan interchange and measures designed to adapt the infrastructure to its new configuration. These include improvements to the connections between the AP-4 and the A-4, the construction of new collector-distributor roads, the upgrading of existing structures and the development of new interchanges to enhance accessibility and operational performance.
Furthermore, the scheme is intended to address the increase in traffic that has been recorded since tolls were removed from the motorway. In this way, it will contribute to more efficient traffic circulation and strengthen the capacity of one of the main road corridors in southern Spain.
The provisional approval marks a further step forward in the project’s administrative process. The scheme will now proceed to the public consultation stage before receiving final approval.
